Why Capital Punishment Still Exists?
Capital punishment has been a cause for debate for many years, and people continue to disagree on the topic. Capital punishment may be a controversial subject, but it is one that must be addressed with today's violent society. The death penalty is believed to provide the necessary punishment and deterrent for criminals in many countries. The issue of capital punishment always comes with the problem of human rights which is a fundamental thing for a civilian. Can we really take away his evil deed or crime by giving him another lethal blow? Below, the reasons why capital punishment should be abolished are as followed.
Firstly, from a religious point of view, we know that God said “Whosoever shed man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed ” which means one cannot take away other’s life. It is quoted right from the book of Genesis saying the creation of the world and assuming God is the master and creator of the world, thus everyone should obey and listen. Resulting from this point, death penalty should never exist because it simply violates the principles from God.
Secondly, the death penalty shows no difference in their crime and murder rate. It is widely believed that the existence of capital punishment is to deterrent the rate of crime. But later on, it is proven that it didn’t make any difference on the rating, instead people still being unaware of the importance of life. Since the mission of reducing the crime rate could not be carried out, then why should it exist? Instead, we should have some alternatives for it, for instance, life sentence.
Thirdly, the possibility of executing an innocent man could be one of the main ammunitions for anti-death penalty movements. Many may doubt that under the well-built juridical system, there won’t be any mistake on judging whether or not one is convicted. But, in fact, there are many people who were now proven that were mistakenly sentenced to death and being wronged for such a long time throughout the history. In order to prevent this from happening, some said that it is necessary to abolish the punishment to save those wronged and innocent men.
In summary, we have seen three major reasons why capital punishment should be abolished from above. Nevertheless, the issue of capital punishment has been hotly debated for a long time since 18th century, which I assumed that it would continue to be controversial in no matter what country or what religion. But, there is one thing we can be sure of is that if the punishment went against the human right, it should be removed at once so as to protect the basic right of a man.
